Saul, as we know, is currently the King over Israel appointed by God because the people of Israel demanded such a king. What Saul does in 1 Samuel 15:8-9 was a direct disobedience to the Lord God Almighty, because in verse 3 of 1 Samuel chapter 3 God specifically tells Saul, through Samuel, to destroy every living thing and leave no one or thing alive. Instead, what Saul did by taking Agag the king of the Amalekites and saving the best of the animals was, indeed, a direct disobedience of the Lord's commandment.
Now, get this in later verses Samuel confronts Saul and tells him that God has rejected him as king, because of his disobedience. What does Saul immediately do? Saul begins making excuses, on after the other. Saul claims it's the peoples fault, he claims he was going to do this or that, but guess what? Saul finally realized that there were no excuses anymore and wanted to worship God, even though God had rejected him as king.
How many times have you heard God telling you to do something and you just ignored Him? God is sovereign and if you continuously reject Him, then in return God will ultimately reject you. God has a plan for each and every one of use on this earth, but it is up to us to except the gift of life and to obey God and carry out His plan. The plan God has for each person is different and is not always easy, but, hear this now, if you are a child of God and you are not doing what God is asking of you, be prepared to be punished. God loves you, but He wants you to obey Him.
I challenge you today, to reflect back and think of times when God has asked you to do something, and you did or didn't do it. How did that affect your life?
