Blessed Are The Righteous & Condemned Are The Wicked

Read: Psalm 1:1-6

The Book of Psalm is a great book of the Bible that display’s many poems and songs by various authors. I will take you through the first 6 verses of the Book of Psalm, and I will explain some of the meanings to which the author, who is unknown, was talking about and referring to. The first 6 verses of Psalm definitely set the ground work for the entire Book of Psalm, and it reiterates the fact that there is only 1 way to God.

Verses 1 & 2 of this chapter of Psalm explain the blessed man. Now, I feel it is important to add, that the term man in this verse simply means a person with an unspecified gender, therefore throughout this article the term will be used likewise. The blessed man is the one who does not allow sin to corrupt his life, and he finds no joy in worldly possessions. The blessed man will find all his joy and delight in the scriptures of God. He will immerse himself in scripture continuously throughout the day and night. The Nelson NKJ Study Bible describes this man as, “An ideal righteous person – one who is in the world, but quite unaffected by the world.”

Verse 3 compares the blessed man to a tree that is planted close to water, and tells how it is prosperous. The analogy in this story of the tree symbolizes that the tree has its roots deep in the ground and close to the water to receive its food, and this is how the blessed man shall be. If the righteous plants their roots deep in the word of God and stay close to God they will be productive and prosperous for the Lord. Now, don’t read this verse and believe that if you study the word of God and do what is right for the Lord and expect to become rich with worldly things. This verse is not saying that! It simply means that if you stay close to the Lord you will be prosperous for Him, so you should not worry about worldly treasures for your reward awaits you in heaven.

Verses 4 & 5 tell of the judgment of those who are unrighteous. Verse 4 begins, from the Nelson NKJ Study Bible, with stating, “The ungodly are not so,” and this part of the verse tells that the unrighteous will not be like the tree planted near the water. Instead, they are worthless and deserve nothing, and these ungodly people will not be allowed to even stand with the congregation of the righteous during judgment. This is because their life will cease and be sent to the fiery pits created for the demons and Satan, while the righteous will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.

Verse 6 is a simple summary and conclusion of verses 1-5 of this scripture. From the Nelson NKJ Study Bible, verse 6 states, “For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.” God has given us all a choice to make, which can be best described as 2 different paths. One path leads the righteous to eternal life, while the other path leads you to nothing more than eternal damnation. The path to eternal life is not always what you want, but it is what God wants for you and Him. The path to death can seem much more appealing, luxurious, and even popular, but it is not worth having temporary possessions here when you can have permanent even more abundant possessions in the Kingdom of Heaven.
