There have been arguments for many years over predestination and free will, which is a shame for the sake of Christianity. Now, hopefully you have read the scripture reference by now, and you are prepared to for this devotional. Today, I hope to enlighten you and myself as we explore this scripture together. Many people will tell you that this is an extremely difficult subject to talk about, but I am here to tell that once God opens your heart and eyes to see the answer it is as clear as the blue sky of a beautiful summer day.
First, let us start in Romans 8:28-30. As you have already read in these verses it seems to lead one to believe that you are called to be a Christian by God without any choice in the matter. This is true to a certain degree, but what many people fail to understand is every single person who has ever been born is predestined to be a Christian. Then free will comes into play, which will be explained later. All these verses are saying is that God is sovereign, and He has the ability to foresee people’s choices. In a little more detail, God knows who will and will not believe, but the invitation of God’s love is offered to us all.
Now, we will go over into John chapter 3 verses 15 through 21. In verses 15 and 16 it is stated, “ that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal/everlasting life.” (Thomas Nelson, Inc). Jesus is talking to Nicodemus and sharing with him the gift of salvation. The Gospels of Jesus Christ is the message we hear, and then God starts to work on us to draw us toward Christ. When God draws us to Christ, we then have a choice to make, but what is the answer? Will you reject Jesus and His words or will you accept Jesus and His word? This, my friend, is where free will comes into the picture. The choice is up to you.
I do have a challenge today for those of you who are not Christians, and for those of you who are Christians. If you have never accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as your lord and Savior and have decided to, then I strongly recommend talking to someone who is a Christian or your local pastor. Now, for those of you who are Christians, I challenge you to share the word of Christ with anyone you know that is not a Christian.
